Pet Grief

As I share the following guidelines to help you grieve the loss of your pet, please keep in mind that each person's grief process is as unique as the relationship between that pet and its owner. However, pet grief can be good grief. Here are some methods to help you overcome your grief and move on, while still cherishing your dog's memory.


Some people think it's crazy to feel such emotion over the loss of a pet. However, fellow pet lovers know from experience that pet grief is real. For many of us, it is as real and painful as the loss of any family member. There are definite phases of grieving and these are normal and healthy. Grief often begins with anticipated loss especially where your pet has had a long-term illness and euthanasia is inevitable. This is where you start the process of saying goodbye and you may start the process by feeling slightly detached.



Recognize that pet loss grief is normal and an important part of the healing process. Having spent two years researching, which included trawling the internet for the best sites and information and studying courses in pet loss and pet bereavement, I decided to write and hope to fill it not just with interesting and helpful information, but with everything you need to know.

Statistics show that after the loss of a spouse, many people remarry too soon, because of the fear of loneliness. Pet grief can cause the same mistakes. Don't be too anxious to fill the void left by your precious pet.Children in this age range are usually able to understand that death is natural, inevitable, and universal. Consequently, these children often react to death in a manner very similar to adults.

I would like this to become a great resource and source of comfort, full of personal stories and experiences, tributes, pet loss journals, and a place where pet lovers share their grief and hopes, but I need your help to make this possible.If your grief becomes so intense that you cannot function normally, seek help from a pet loss support group or a professional.
